What we clean up

The Damage a Fire Leaves Behind

Even a small kitchen fire spreads smoke and soot through the whole house, and the water used to fight it can do as much damage as the flames.

  • Kitchen & Appliance Fires

Stovetop, oven and dryer fires that coat the kitchen and nearby rooms in greasy soot.

  • Firefighting Water

Hoses and sprinklers soak floors, walls and ceilings, and that water has to be removed and dried.

  • Smoke Odor

Smoke gets into drywall, carpet, furniture and the HVAC system, and the smell lingers.

  • Soot on Walls & Ceilings

Soot stains walls and ceilings, and it smears if it's wiped the wrong way.

  • Damaged Floors

Heat, soot and water damage hardwood, carpet and tile.

  • Charred Materials

Burned drywall, framing, cabinets and trim that have to be removed and rebuilt.

Time matters

Smoke Damage Spreads After the Fire Is Out

Soot is acidic. The longer it sits on surfaces, the more it stains, etches and corrodes, and the more has to be replaced instead of cleaned.

  1. First hours

    Soot settles everywhere

Fine soot settles on walls, ceilings, counters and fabrics through the whole house.

  2. First days

    Surfaces start to stain

Plastics, grout, painted walls and finishes yellow and discolor from soot.

  3. Within a week

    Odor sets in

Smoke smell soaks deeper into drywall, carpet, furniture and ductwork.

  4. After that

    Cleaning turns into replacing

Metals corrode, stains become permanent, and wet areas from firefighting can grow mold.

Do this before we arrive

  • Only go back inside once the fire department says it's safe.
  • Open windows for fresh air if the weather allows.
  • Photograph every room, including soot, water and charred areas, before anything is moved.
  • Call your insurance company to report the fire.

Avoid

  • Don't wipe soot off walls or furniture. It smears and sets the stain.
  • Don't run the HVAC system until it's checked. It can spread soot through the house.
  • Don't eat food or use cosmetics that were near the fire, heat or smoke.

What's included

Fire Cleanup From Soot to Rebuild

A house fire doesn’t end when the flames are out. Smoke and soot travel into every room, the water used to put the fire out soaks the floors and walls below, and the smell can linger for months if it isn’t handled right. REA Floors provides fire and smoke damage restoration across North Jersey, from Fair Lawn to Hackensack, Teaneck, Paramus and the rest of Bergen County.

What fire damage restoration includes

  • Water extraction and drying after firefighting
  • Removal of charred materials, including drywall, insulation, cabinets and trim
  • Soot cleanup on walls, ceilings, floors and surfaces
  • Smoke odor removal from the structure
  • Carpet, rug and upholstery cleaning for what can be saved
  • Rebuilding with drywall, paint, carpentry and floors

Smoke and water damage, handled together

Most fire jobs are two jobs at once: a smoke and soot cleanup, and a water damage job from the hoses and sprinklers. Handling both with one crew means the drying, cleaning and tear-out are planned together instead of one contractor waiting on another. Water left in the walls after a fire can grow mold, so we dry the structure as soon as the house is cleared.

Floors after a fire

Floors take a beating in a fire: heat, soot, water and the boots of everyone who came through. Floors are our specialty. We’ll tell you honestly which hardwood can be refinished and which needs to be replaced, and we clean the carpets and rugs that made it through.

Putting the house back together

Once the house is clean, dry and odor-free, our reconstruction team replaces what the fire took: drywall, ceilings, trim, paint and flooring. You deal with one company and one estimate from the first call to the last coat of paint.

How it works

Our Fire Damage Restoration Process

Fire jobs have a lot of moving parts. We handle them in this order so nothing gets cleaned twice.

  1. Step 1

    Secure & assess

We walk the property, check the smoke, soot and water damage, and plan the job.

  2. Step 2

    Remove water & debris

We extract the firefighting water, start drying and remove charred materials.

  3. Step 3

    Clean soot & remove odor

Walls, ceilings, floors and surfaces are cleaned, and smoke odor is treated.

  4. Step 4

    Rebuild & restore

Drywall, paint, carpentry and floors are put back, so the room is livable again.

Cleaned Up.
Then Rebuilt.

Fire damage almost always means some drywall, trim and flooring has to come out. REA Floors handles the rebuild too, so the crew that cleaned up the soot is the crew that puts your rooms back together.

  • Walls and ceilings repainted
  • Floors refinished or replaced

Fire & Smoke Damage FAQs

Answers to the questions people ask us most after a fire.

1-800-398-9007
Can I clean soot myself?

We don't recommend it. Wiping soot with a wet cloth or household cleaner usually smears it deeper into the surface and sets the stain. Soot needs the right cleaning method for each surface.

How do you get rid of smoke smell?

Smoke odor comes out by removing what's too damaged to save, cleaning every surface the smoke touched and treating the odor in the structure. Masking it with air fresheners doesn't work for long.

Why is there water damage after a fire?

Firefighters use a lot of water, and sprinklers add more. That water soaks floors, walls and ceilings and needs to be extracted and dried like any other water damage, or it can lead to mold.

Is fire damage covered by insurance?

Fire is usually covered by standard homeowners policies, but every policy is different. Report the fire to your insurer right away, and we'll document the damage for your claim.

Can my carpets and rugs be saved after smoke damage?

Often, yes, if they weren't burned or soaked with dirty water. Floors and carpets are our specialty, and we clean carpets, area rugs and upholstery as part of fire restoration.

Do you rebuild after a fire?

Yes. We replace the drywall, trim, paint and flooring that the fire, smoke or water damaged, so you deal with one company from cleanup to finish.
