Where it starts

Common Causes of Water Damage in North Jersey Homes

Most of the calls we get across Bergen County start inside the house. Whatever the source, the faster the water comes out, the less has to be torn out.

  • Burst & Frozen Pipes

North Jersey winters split pipes in exterior walls, crawlspaces and unheated garages. One break can flood two floors.

  • Washing Machine Hoses

A worn supply hose can let go while you're at work and run until someone comes home.

  • Toilet & Tub Overflows

Clogs and failed fill valves overflow fast, and the water drips through to the ceiling below.

  • Water Heater Failures

Tanks in basements and utility closets rust out and leak into finished rooms and carpet.

  • Roof Leaks & Ice Dams

Storms and winter ice dams push water under shingles and through ceilings and walls.

  • Sump Pump Failures

A dead pump or a power outage during a storm puts water across the basement floor.

Time matters

Why the First 48 Hours Matter

Water doesn't sit still. Every hour it soaks deeper into floors, walls and the rooms below, and what could have been dried becomes something that has to be replaced.

  1. First minutes

    Water spreads

It runs across floors, soaks carpet and padding, and seeps under baseboards into the walls.

  2. Hours 1–24

    Materials soak it up

Drywall wicks water upward, hardwood starts to swell and cup, and furniture stains the carpet.

  3. Hours 24–48

    Mold can start

Wet drywall, carpet pad and wood can begin growing mold, and a musty smell sets in.

  4. After 48 hours

    Damage spreads

Subfloors and framing weaken, mold spreads, and more of the house has to be torn out and rebuilt.

Do this before we arrive

  • Shut off the water at the source, or at the main valve if you can't find it.
  • Turn off power to wet rooms only if you can reach the breaker panel without standing in water.
  • Move electronics, rugs and valuables up and out of the water.
  • Take photos and video of the water and the damage before anything is moved.

Avoid

  • Don't use a household vacuum to pick up water.
  • Don't turn on ceiling lights or fans under a wet, sagging ceiling.
  • Don't wait to see if it dries on its own.

What's included

Water Damage Restoration, Done Right the First Time

When a pipe bursts or a washing machine hose lets go, the clock starts right away. Water keeps moving, soaking into carpet and padding, wicking up drywall and dripping into the room below. REA Floors provides water damage restoration in Bergen County, NJ and nearby Rockland County, NY, with a live operator on the phone 24/7 and a crew usually on site within the hour.

What our water damage restoration includes

Restoration is more than running a few fans. Every job includes:

  • Stopping the source and checking how far the water traveled
  • Emergency water extraction with our heavy-duty 2-inch pump, which moves 60 gallons a minute
  • Wet carpet and padding removal, and extraction of carpet that can be saved
  • Selective tear-out of drywall, insulation, trim and flooring that can’t be dried
  • Structural drying with industrial dehumidifiers and air movers
  • Odor and mildew control so the room smells like home again
  • Rebuilding everything we removed, back to the way it was

Why drying it right matters

A floor can feel dry days before the subfloor under it is. Drywall, padding and framing that stay damp will warp, smell and grow mold weeks later. We check moisture throughout the job and don’t pull our equipment until the readings say the structure is dry. If mold has already started, our mold remediation team contains and removes it before anything is closed up.

Floors are our specialty

Floors are in our name for a reason. Hardwood, ceramic, marble, carpet and oriental rugs are what we know best. When water gets into your floors, we know which boards can be dried and refinished and which need to be replaced, and we can clean the carpets and area rugs that made it through.

Homes and businesses across North Jersey

We restore houses, apartments, offices, schools and storefronts from our base in Fair Lawn, including Hackensack, Teaneck, Fort Lee, Garfield, Englewood, Bergenfield, Paramus, Ridgewood, Lodi, Mahwah and Rutherford. For storm and river flooding, see flood damage restoration. For water in the basement, see flooded basement cleanup.

How it works

Our Water Damage Restoration Process

The same four steps on every job, so you always know what's happening and what comes next.

  1. Step 1

    Stop the water & assess

We stop the source, check how far the water traveled and walk you through the plan before work starts.

  2. Step 2

    Extract standing water

Our 2-inch pump and extractors pull water out of floors, carpet and padding, fast.

  3. Step 3

    Tear out & dry

We remove wet drywall, padding and flooring that can't be saved, then set up dehumidifiers and air movers.

  4. Step 4

    Rebuild & restore

Once the readings say it's dry, we put the drywall, paint, trim and floors back in.

Coverage depends on your policy. We explain what we found so you can tell them exactly what happened.

  3. 03

    We work with your adjuster

We walk the adjuster through the damage and the plan, then get to work restoring your home.

Ilan is great to work with I had a flood in my house and i called him and he was at our house within an hour. He explained the process for removing damaged drywall and carpet and then setting up an industrial strength dehumidifier and fans to ensure there was no residual moisture or chance of mold. He did exactly as explained. I would definitely recommend him!!

Water Damage Restoration FAQs

Straight answers to what Bergen County homeowners ask us first. Don't see your question? Call us, day or night.

What should I do while I wait for your crew?

Shut off the water at the main valve, keep people away from wet ceilings and outlets, lift what you can off the floor and take photos for your insurer. Then leave the rest to us. A crew is usually there within the hour.

How long does it take to dry out a house after water damage?

It depends on how much water there was, how long it sat and what it soaked into. We take moisture readings every visit and don't call a room dry until the readings say it is, not just when it feels dry to the touch.

Can wet carpet and hardwood floors be saved?

Often, if the water is clean and it's removed quickly. Wet carpet padding usually has to be replaced, but the carpet itself can sometimes be dried and cleaned. Hardwood can often be dried and refinished if we get to it before the boards cup badly. Floors are our specialty, so we'll tell you honestly what can be saved.

Can water be hidden behind walls?

Yes. Water wicks up drywall, runs under flooring and travels through wall cavities. We use moisture meters to find where the water actually went, not just where you can see it.

Does homeowners insurance cover water damage?

Many policies cover sudden and accidental water damage, like a burst pipe or a failed washing machine hose, but may not cover slow leaks or flooding from outside. We work with insurance companies and document the damage to support your claim.

Who fixes the walls and floors we tear out?

We do. The drywall, insulation, trim, paint and flooring we remove during the dry-out are rebuilt by our own crew, so there's no second contractor to find and no second estimate to wait for.
